The sculpture is an ornament from Gerhart Hauptmann's writing room on Hiddensee. The summer house is stocked with a large number of artworks. They demonstrate the playwright's unbroken affection for the fine arts. Gerhart Hauptmann had originally toyed with the idea of a profession as a sculptor and studied for a longer period at the art academies in Breslau and Dresden. His circle of friends and acquaintances over the years included many fine artists. There are works by Ludwig von Hofmann, Georg Kolbe, Käthe Kollwitz, Emil Orlik and others in his home on Hiddensee.
