The outdoor painting of the late 19th century also led to the creation of an artists’ colony in Mecklenburg. Franz Bunke, born in Schwaan, founded a painting school and in summer assembled mainly female students. At the same time the artist, who trained under Theodor Hagen at the Weimar art academy, himself became a professor there. His pictures regularly depict the landscapes around his home town of Schwaan.
