Throughout his life Georg Friedrich Kersting retained contact with his home town of Güstrow. This is evidenced by the picture entitled “Children by an open window” that he gave to the Güstrow councillor, Friedrich Georg Sibeth, for Christmas in 1843. In this painting Kersting captures the emotional world of his contemporaries in a way that cannot be found in any of his other works. The countless reproductions created on the basis of the picture are testament to this. The girl in the foreground is Kersting’s only daughter Anna.
