Bild

The crane is a typical motif for this region and was regularly deployed by Marcks. In 1933 Gerhard Marcks was dismissed from his job as a teacher at the state-municipal school for applied arts at Giebichenstein Castle in Halle. He moved back to Niehagen in Mecklenburg (today part of Ahrenshoop). In 1937 his works were defamed as being “degenerate.” He was forbidden from exhibiting his work. The work was acquired from private ownership via the FAMA art foundation and is now housed in the Ahrenshoop Museum of Art.
