The expansion of the German colonies into the South Seas aroused interest in the indigenous cultures of these regions, which were perceived as exotic paganism. Many collection pieces from the South Seas came via the estate of Bernhard Funk (1844-1911), a doctor and emigrant, back into his old home city. People still remember Funk’s stay in Samoa.
