The housing problem was a key political issue in the GDR. Serial industrial production in the area of panel construction was favoured as a way of providing as many people as possible with somewhere to live. The WBS 70 type was developed in the 1970s by, among others, the Neubrandenburg housing combine and was the most common form of housing in the GDR with approximately 650,000 apartments. The first apartment block in Neubrandenburg, located in the eastern district, has been a listed building since 1984.
