Model of Schliemann's villa "Iliou Melathron" in Athens
- 1881
- length: 41 cm
- (model by Günter Romann)
Heinrich Schliemann had a house built in Athens between 1879 and 1881 based on designs made by the architect Ernst Ziller. The interior decorations allude to the excavations performed in Mycenae and Troy. This "house or Trojan hut” is actually a palace. In 1926, Schliemann's widow (Sophia Engastromenos) had to sell the house to the Greek state because of financial problems. It has housed the Numismatic Museum since 1998 following its restoration, and contains a room dedicated to the memory of Heinrich Schliemann.
