This painting is a section from a larger artwork, which has not survived. The incomplete inscriptions cite verses of the Bible; on the left: Psalm 25, verse 18 'Look upon mine affliction and my pain'. The chest used to store the moneys collected by the church is shown underneath on the left. Ecclesiastes 28, verse 27 is quoted at the bottom.
