High Gothic parish and monastery churches were created in all major towns and, in most cases, replaced the earlier buildings. Artistically formed moulded blocks were used to build archways, partitions and column structures. High Gothic parish and monastery churches were created in all major towns and, in most cases, replaced the earlier buildings. The twin steeples on St Nicholas testify to a claim to secular power as well. This is shown in the reliefs of the Novgorod traveller stalls with their earthly depictions of trade. St Nicholas in Anklam, a church with three aisles, is also completed in this period. Nikolaos of Myra, the eponym, is the patron saint of seafarers.
