Professional schools in Wismar, Heiligendamm, Rostock and Wustrow were technically distinguished. The university received a technical shipbuilding faculty. Pedagogical colleges in Schwerin, Güstrow and Neubrandenburg trained teachers for polytechnics and extended secondary schools.
From 1990 education and science in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were restructured. School structures were changed several times. The Paedagogiums were closed. Güstrow, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg received new colleges. The number of people working in colleges had fallen by 1992 from 141,000 to 25,000.
An outstanding achievement was the redevelopment and new construction of the Katharinenstift in Rostock into the University of Music and Theatre.
