Life and death were never far apart. Infant mortality rates were very high. Women often died shortly after childbirth. Many people again fell victim to the plague and cholera. In Wismar around 1350 more than 2,000 people are believed to have died from these diseases. In 1387 the “black death” was raging in Rostock. Armed robberies and disputes were part of everyday life.
