Megalithic tombs and hill forts are the oldest form of architecture in Mecklenburg. The north German red brick Gothic style became a separate form in the Middle Ages. Later epochs did not achieve their own unique position. Low German became a separate literary language with Fritz Reuter in the 19th century. Around 1900 outdoor painters created art centres on the Baltic Sea and in Schwaan. During the first half of the 20th century, sculpture attained special status through Ernst Barlach in Güstrow.
All other art forms were subject to national and international trends.
